Bernard Flowers holds a Master's degree from the Royal College of Art and has exhibited internationally in group and solo shows. Now London based, he was born in the Netherlands, yet spent many years in Russia, initially working in the dairy industry before settling on a full time art career.
The series Woodland before Fields is a vision of the primordial forest which, following the last Ice Age, covered the entirety of the European continent as well as the British Isles. This edgeless, uninterrupted forest ended only at the shores.
Cradled by the forest, European history came into being and local communities and cultures gradually took shape. Human progress, however, necessitated a clearing of this woodland, be it for agriculture or for timber. This ongoing process has in our times reached the point of a near-total extinction of ancient woodland across the continent.
Painted on sculpted oak panels, the works inhabit the space between painting and sculpture - between abstracted, illusionist representation and a physicality that responds to different viewing angles and lighting directions.
